It’s Fall y’all, and here in North Carolina we usually celebrate with a heat wave. Not this year though, the temperature has finally gone down enough to lull us into a Fallse (see what I did there?) sense of autumnal security.
One of the biggest questions I get around this season revolves around Apple Cider Donuts. Apple Cider Donuts aren’t common in Raleigh. They’re a staple of New England’s Autumn, but we’re too far south to really experience the majesty.
Having said that, we shouldn’t stop trying.
Here are 7 places you can get an Apple Cider Donut (or something close) near Raleigh
The Blue Ox Bakery in Raleigh
The Apple Cider donuts made by The Blue Ox Bakery might be as close as you can get in the Triangle. They’re made by a real New Englander! You can find them in the pastry case over at Little Blue Bakehouse or at one of their Fall Hot Donut Pop Ups. Grabbing a hot apple cider donut at one of the hot donut pop ups is likely the closest we can get to a genuine apple cider donut experience.
Kim’s Bakeshop in Hillsborough
Apple Cider is the most popular donut flavor at Kim’s Bakeshop and can be found there every day that they’re open.
Monuts in Durham
Apple Cider Donuts are back on the Monuts menu. You can grab a donut along with coffee and a sandwich for a fancy Fall meal.
Early Bird Donuts in Durham
Early Bird posted on their socials that they are making cider cake donuts. As the name implies, you should get there early. They run out of things quickly.
Millstone Creek Orchards in Ramseur
This orchard offers apple cider mini-donuts and apple slushies. In the North Carolina heat, that's an optimal choice. The mini-donuts have gained popularity and are offered in various seasonal flavors on weekends throughout most of the year.
Hill Ridge Farms in Youngsville
On September 19th, Hill Ridge Farms started rolling out their apple cider donuts for the Fall Pumpkin Festival. The festival includes various activities and requires guests to pay admission in order to participate. EDIT: Fresh apple cider donut in a few different flavors are available at the Country Store. No admission is required to shop in the store or market area.
Botanist and Barrel in Cedar Grove
Will have them available on October 3rd at their 8th Annual Apple Fest. Entry is $5 and includes an apple cider donut.
